So I get asked quite often about how I make couples look natural in photos – the truth is – to be completely honest – they may look natural and at ease but in most cases they are not. Engagement sessions can be really hard in fact – harder than the wedding day. Of course every engaged couple is in love but the thing is the wedding day is easy – the emotions are just naturally there and you’re surrounded by friends and family wearing outfits that are tailor made to you and you look awesome. Engagement photos are a little trickier because we have to tap into those emotions on a day that you may be tired, you may have had a spat or you may just feel weird having the camera on you. The most important thing is to let go and realize that you will probably feel goofy or silly but as long as you’ve chosen the right photographer and focus on being authentic (keep the session relevant to your personalities) everything will be ok – in fact it will be great because you have proof before the wedding day that your chosen photographer is going to make you look amazing! I personally approach these sessions by doing what I do best – being sarcastic and talking a lot. I try to keep things relaxed and make people laugh. One of my favourite things to do is to ask the groom to be to whisper sweet nothings into his future brides ear; now as you can imagine I have heard a lot of interesting things over the years. Some funny, some weird and some definitely unique – tonights lovelies gave me the treat of listening to math word problems – but hey it made the bride to be giggle so who am I to question that! Honestly, I had a great time tonight at Short Hills and erm surrounding *private* properties that we may or may not have permission to shoot on. Thank you Brit and Chris for getting my sense of humour and for putting up with my teasing – I have to say I think you guys look pretty fantastic in these photos – now let’s see em!
